30 October 2022

A day that wasn't supposed to go like this at all, but we always enjoy the unexpected!

The aim was to visit the famous Stonehaven Castle, perched on the cliffs north of Dundee. When we arrived at the bus station, we realised that the planned X7 bus had been cancelled (due to a weekend of strikes and a general lack of drivers).

Well, we'll take the next one 30 minutes later. A slight diversion to Greggs (a chain of cafes and pastry shops, sandwiches... found every 500 meters or so in the UK, a must-see!) to wait for the time to pass, then back to the bus station. X7 was cancelled again... Change of plans in that case, fate is against us, we will go to Broughty Ferry. We head for another bus stop a little further on. A "feeling" made us look at the bus company's application: bus cancelled... Still motivated and ready to improvise, we decided to go there on foot, it's not very far (about a 1h30 walk), and it will be the opportunity to walk along the coast. The walk was truly pleasant, we went through the harbour and then got closer to Broughty Ferry where we could see the castle from afar.

Another surprise was that it started to rain, so we visited this famous castle. The entrance is free and houses several floors of paintings, maritime objects and stuffed animals. A very lovely little excursion! A little anecdote, while looking at the paintings more closely, a student in the group realises that one of the paintings represents his home town in the Netherlands!

We then headed back to the village centre to sit down for lunch, and buy a meal for those concerned - the opportunity to rest a little.

Finally, we went for a last walk on the beach, under the noise of the waves and seagulls. Some fishermen were trying to catch something, but most come here to walk and enjoy the fresh sea air.

To get back, some of us chose to walk to Dundee, but I decided to take the bus back.

An improvised day but one that went very well!
